About The Author - Writers Bio
My name is James R Bowman and this is a summarized writing history of how we got to be where we are right now. Before writing it is important to know I read… I read an awful lot. The genre I initially favoured was the horror genre, this I absorbed. The greats, King, Masterton, Herbert, and Barker amongst many others regaled me, but there was a post college shift and I found myself gravitating to fantasy or as my colleagues affectionately term, Wizards and Goblins. I devoured Tolkien, Eddings, Goodkind, Jordan, Brooks, Le Guin, Gemmell and many, many more besides. I still have an extensive library and after some 30 years of existential studies and metaphysical dealing with my parapsychologist wife much of what we had learned, read and experienced finally manifested as writing when the bottle brimmed over. The first book, THE ADVERSARY launched Halloween 2009 and quickly attracted attention, so much so it was shortlisted in the entire UK for a BWA award early 2010, SCIFINOW magazine gave it 4 out of 5 stars and a ‘must read now’ in its international magazine shortly thereafter. Comparing its epic scale and urban horror to Bruckheimer and Gaiman.
Our metaphoric bottle was created due to a metaphysical journey. Sue (my wife) and I embarked on a quest for knowledge that began over 30 years ago. Seeking and questioning the world as we know it, as well as the world we don’t know. This took us to the Southwest USA and an exploration of the People. What is now termed the Native Americans or the Puebloan People and the Navajo, amongst many others across the continental USA. We also explored theology, anthropology, geology, philosophy, mythology as well as a whole host of worldwide phenomena and this started to form a pattern, certainly to us anyway. Fortunately for the world, we don’t see it the same as everyone else but instead of just pointing it out to a race that has spent centuries not seeing it, we took a bardic approach, a story to encapsulate the essence of the myriad of discoveries we found, that’s much more exciting than just being told something, it worms into your DNA and may not surface until much later as stories do. But they are what stay with us humans, the stories we heard, then read and now watch.
The saga is entirely handwritten in 15 A4 pads and the 1052 page long ADVERSARY was the adaptation of just 4. Working against creative obstacles it was deemed necessary to streamline, rebrand and expand the work; so THE SERAPHIM COLLECTIVE CHRONICLES was born. It now incorporates THE ADVERSARY within it, divided into 3 expanded and separate tales within the multiverse it exists in. The voices decided THE SHARD should be a fresh book 1 to begin anew with the ADVERSARY becoming books 2, 3 and 4. Its sequel which was also from the first four pads has become books 5, 6 and 7. With a little help, we designed both the cover for the ADVERSARY and have done so again for the SERAPHIM COLLECTIVE CHRONICLES. Book 1 THE SHARD is now available on LULU, Amazon both as paperback and as E book or can be ordered through your book store.
As well as books, I was and still am (where I can) an avid movie and series watcher and can safely say I can navigate my way around this and most other genres cinematically; with that in mind, I felt confident of adapting my books into multiple screenplays (5 for THE SHARD) without the handicap of dire-logue and sloppy endings. I have intentionally penned a saga that is as much about the journey as it is the finale and can be bespoke to large or small screen, long running episodic or as many movies as required. Especially as many of the big franchises have either ended or are waning.
We hope you enjoy reading, watching and hopefully making as much as we enjoyed writing them and discovering the content over the decades previous, and we look forward to sharing this in the decades to come. MITAKUYE OYASIN.
